Feltech Install TV Studio for University of Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire has invested £9 million in a purpose-built Digital Facilities Building providing 4,500 square metres of contemporary work space; under one roof are fully-equipped computer suites, studios and workshops for their expanding activities in animation, music, multimedia, and video and sound.

The School of Film, Media and Music has its origins in a 125 year-old art, design and media college which became part of the University in 1992, and is now backed by considerable investment. Together with the School of Art and Design, it makes up the Faculty for the Creative and Cultural Industries. The Faculty is based at the College Lane campus, close to the centre of the UK’s film and media production, and London’s thriving music, entertainment and post-production communities.

The development of new facilities for The School of Film, Media and Music involved the design and installation of an HD TV studio, production gallery and post-production areas, linked by a data ingest and storage system.  The installation process took place during the summer of 2007, and was ready for use in the autumn term. Feltech were contracted to provide the design and installation.

The University wished to have full ‘High-Definition’ capability throughout the Studio and Editing process. The equipment specified had to reflect this; Panasonic’s AG-HPX500E Cameras were chosen and then adapted to studio use, the mixer was a For-A Hanabi HVS-1000HS, display monitors were Panasonic, all the equipment used HD-SDI to get the highest possible quality.

The Studio was also equipped with cyclorama track, chromakey facilities, studio lighting, autocue system and Vinten tripods – essentially everything you would expect to find in a broadcasting environment. This enabled students to be taught about the process involved in the making of television programs, including production techniques and all the technical aspects such as lighting, sound, cameras, vision mixing etc.

In the Gallery the HD-SDI signals were distributed through a Pro-Bel Halo 32x32 HD-SDI router and  patch panels. Tie lines were supplied so that the Apple XSan ingest system, the Final Cut Pro Editing systems and the TV Studio could share the central storage allowing projects and media to be accessed by any workstation and giving the University a great deal of flexibility.

The studio was installed on time and on budget.
